Work is burning out young people more than any other generation, FAST.
Work is burning us.
Us younger generations have coveted a reputation of being complacent, entitled and jumping from job to job because we can't commit.
But.. where do we draw the line between "attitude problems" and mental health?
"In a survey, half of millennials, those between 24 and 39, said they'd left a job at least partly for mental health reasons. For Gen Z-those between 18 and 23-the percentage spikes to 75, compared with just 20 per cent among the general population."
Work burnout and workplace bullying is one of the most common issues I see in sessions with my young people, by and large perpetuated by people who feel we should be "tough and get on with it"and set almost impossible standards at low pay brackets..
A lack of effective, supportive community in workplaces is a KEY part in this.
The workplaces that i've overheard "value mental health" and then make incongruent, generalised complaints about "young people" is rampant.
The increase in pace, the dramatic increase in demands and not matching with pay and benefit is making us jaded, frustrated and mentally unwell.
Are you a young person struggling with impending burnout and poor mental health due to work?
I’d love to support you in a session to get you feeling your best
Here are some of my tips to improve your mental health and stop burnout:
What is your WHY for work? What is meaningful to you? What made you want to do this work in the first place? Not having a meaningful, fulfilling purpose can put you at risk for burnout.
This doesn’t need to be HUGE - it might be “being helpful, being a positive influence in the workplace, assisting in the companies mission”Does your workplace align with your values? A clash in values can be a significant challenge in sustaining your work momentum and passion.
How are you separating work and personal life? ARE you separating work and personal life?
What boundaries do you need to put in?
How is work impacting your self esteem? What would be helpful for you to feel better?
Eg. Improving relationships at work, asking for feedback, working on your mental health outside work.
